Endless Winters

Winter seems to stick around far too long, at least in some parts of the world. I live in Wisconsin and by this time of the year, I am over the cold, the snow and my winter wardrobe. I have a Kenneth Cole down winter coat that is a must in this climate but am dying for some kind of variety. Winter colors seem to be very neutral, blacks, greys and dark green. It is a lot of fun around the holidays when you get to have ugly sweater parties (see my beautiful family below), and the lights around town make you forget you live a little too close to the artic. But once the holiday pass, you are stuck in short cold days and even colder nights. If you are like me, it hard to wear what you want and still feel parts of your body. When you are struggling to find a coat that adds any variety to your wardrobe within the last three months, I have some suggestions. Keep the long down coats handy for those wind chill advisories, but add some flavor to help the season not seem so long. My first suggestion for when it gets one or two degrees above freezing is a long wool coat. They come in a variety of color options as opposed to those long down coats. Try making it a long wool poncho and pair it with some heeled boots. Another good option is a quilted coat which usually offers a belt to help with the baggy winter coats typically offered. Lastly, thick peacoats. Classic, sharp and warm.

Winter wardrobes are far less exciting than the popular spring and fall but if you live in a climate like mine, it’s a solid 4 months of the year. Why not add variety? I have a hard time finding shoes in winter as well. There is salt and frozen snow everywhere in this town. I wear my Uggs when I take out the dogs and the warmth is unbeatable but they are a sight for sore eyes. I feel like my rain boots with wool socks get worn every time it snows because you can't beat the traction. My practicability seems to be good but I don't like living in Uggs and rain boots or boots in general. I try to mix it up with material that won’t get ruined with the salt and still keeps my feet warm. I have some great thick heeled booties that I wear that work great. The thick heel adds traction and they are inner lined with fur so my toes are happy. Remember I live in heels (I'm 5'0 so it only makes sense). Try to spice it up even if one day a week. Winter can be long but it doesn't have to feel longer than it is. Xoxo.
